Carry On

Sometimes life is frustrating.
I'm the type of person who gets really aggravated when I'm explaining
my passions/dreams to someone and they just don't care enough to try to understand.

I'm not asking them to love what I love or do what I do.
I just want people in my life to be excited with me and for me.

My family is so wonderful, but some of them have placed
(whether consciously or subconsciously) expectations on me
that don't align with my dreams but with their dreams for me.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't push people to be the best that they can be. I'm all about that.
If someone is making a choice that is wrong I absolutely think that it should be confronted.
But if someone is making a choice that isn't wrong, but just isn't what you want for them
well then I hate to say it, but you just have to back up and learn to support them.

Give them your 2 cents once and then support them in any way that you can.
Remember to taste your words before you spit them out. Because words hit hard, and once
they've been said they can't be taken back.

Basically I just want to encourage you to go after your dreams.
No matter how big they are or how small they may seem.
Even if it feels like the world is against you, keep pushing forward.
You've got this. You can do this. You have what it takes.

  1. Amen, sistah! LOVE this, so much. I recently decided to change my major to pursue my passions rather than practicality, and so many people have been more discouraging than they realize. I think it can be hard for us to see past ourselves and really recognize someone else's happiness sometimes... For whatever reason. Thanks for posting this!

  2. I'm sorry you aren't feeling 100% supported about pursuing your dreams. I think it is hard for some people to let go what they think or have thought others would/should do. But that rather than telling them that over and over, supporting and encouraging them is so much better! hoping after this post you feel much encouragement!

  3. This has happened to me with college major, jobs, volunteer work, people I date, the person I married, where I live, etc. The list goes on and on. The best proof/revenge I have to offer is to be happy. Nothing says "Shut up, because I know what I'm doing" better than being happy without their nagging words. ;)

You are wonderful and talented and intelligent, Jess. You've got this!

  4. Definitely feel you on this girl! Sometimes people think they know what's best for you 24/7 when really you're the only person who truly knows what's best for you.

You are a wonderful person living a wonderful life! Don't let anybody tell you what to do! =)

  6. Well said friend!!! I try to remember to stay positive, even while giving a difference in opinion. Gotta remember that it's THEM you love and support... which means through what you agree and disagree with!!

I would hope that the person I am supporting would understand that my advice isn't the final say so... it's just my opinion. What they do with it or without it is their choice.

    I heart you friend!!

  7. Oh man, does this sum up everything I do. Haha I have the unfortunate quality of caring what everyone else thinks too much. But keep doing you girl, you're amazing! :)

  11. "Remember to taste your words before you spit them out"...well said. It is so easy to make an off-handed remark that seems innocent enough--but is fueled by judgment. I've had otherwise kind people tell me that I can't [fill in the blank] with a smile on their face. Taste your words, indeed.

  13. i think this happens in every family...and i know once you're successful (which you WILL be) you will know the trials and struggles will be so worth it.

keep your head up! they will come around. just know it's with good intentions.

  14. Some of my family was pushy with what I should do, but since I married my husband, moved away, and have carried on with the life I'm wanting to lead, they have realized that I am happier than I've ever been. I still don't know what I want to be "when I grow up", but I do know that I'm happy. Happiness = success!
